Green Globe

How sustainable is our hotel?

Hotel Nijmegen-Lent is the proud owner of a Green Globe certificate. Green Globe is a global certification program for sustainable travel and tourism. It focuses on economic, social, and environmentally responsible management. The requirements of Green Globe relate to a well-functioning environmental management system, compliance with local environmental legislation, contributing to local nature and environmental protection, and providing employment opportunities to the local population.

Sustainability program

We believe that hospitality goes hand in hand with running our business in the most environmentally friendly way possible. That is why we invest in facilities that make our hotel, restaurant, and meeting rooms better and greener.

In our business operations, we focus on the three P's: Profit, Planet I'm sorry, but I need a text to translate into English. Could you please provide me with the text you would like me to translate? People. Sustainable entrepreneurship means to us that in addition to striving for profit (Profit), we also take into account the impact of our activities on the environment (Planet) and also aim to have a positive influence on the people inside and outside our company (People). The better the balance between these three P's, the more sustainable the results for us as a hotel as well as for society.

People

  • Taking care of the safety and health of our guests and employees.

  • Taking care of the satisfaction of our guests, suppliers, employees, and partners.

  • Contributing to local economic and social development

Profit

  • Long-term investments in the form of training and development opportunities for our employees.

  • Implementing a sustainable procurement policy

  • Generating revenue/profit

Planet

  • Minimizing our impact on the environment

  • Supporting initiatives in the field of nature conservation

Environment

We attach great importance to respect for the environment. Van der Valk Hotel Nijmegen-Lent actively participates in environmental protection in the following ways:

Raising awareness of our guests:

  • We meet the needs of our guests and inspire them to work together with us towards a better world. Because guests can also contribute during their stay by making conscious choices.

  • We prefer electronic communication for all our external communication (email, electronic brochures, newsletters, quotes, invoices).

  • The changing of towels in the hotel rooms is upon request from the guest.

  • The changing of bed linen in the hotel rooms is done after three nights or upon request from the guest.

  • We encourage our guests to use transportation that causes little or no pollution; public transport, cycling, walking, etc. We offer guests the opportunity to rent (electric) bicycles.

  • We serve multiple organic / FairTrade products for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • Our menus feature local and seasonal products.

  • There are vegetarian dishes on the menu and we serve vegan dishes upon request.

  • We serve. Wayang Coffee100% climate-neutral produced and Fairtrade certified

Raising awareness among our employees:

  • To increase our employees' sense of responsibility towards the environment, we apply learning methods that enable us to achieve our goals.

  • Every employee takes a sustainability course. The emphasis is on personal situations and on responsible behavior in daily tasks within the hotel.

  • By using work instructions (such as reporting leaking taps to the technical department), our employees are reminded to implement an environmentally friendly policy.

  • To continuously improve our sustainable policy, employees are encouraged to provide input on their ideas for improvement, among other things through our suggestion box and an annual satisfaction survey.

Raising awareness among our suppliers:

  • We aim to purchase sustainable products and services by actively collaborating with responsible suppliers. We encourage our suppliers to reduce their negative impact (number of deliveries, weight reduction, recyclability of packaging, etc.). The majority of our suppliers have signed a sustainability declaration to contribute to this.

Reducing our impact on the environment:

  • In order to monitor and control our greenhouse gas emissions, we will conduct a COI'm sorry, but I need a text to translate. Please provide me with the text you would like me to translate. This includes collecting information, calculating greenhouse gas emissions, setting reduction targets, and developing an action plan.

We aim to reduce our CO2 emissions.I'm sorry, but I need a text to translate. Please provide a text for translation. reducing emissions by taking various measures:

  • We ask our suppliers to deliver as efficiently as possible.

  • We prefer local suppliers whenever possible.

  • We use a waste compactor to reduce the volume of waste, resulting in fewer trips by the truck to the hotel.

  • Plastic is being separated.

  • We encourage less environmentally polluting transportation. Our location next to the train station is perfect for this! Additionally, we rent out (electric) bicycles.

We also contribute to the reduction of the release of chemical substances by using:

  • Environmentally certified paper

  • Biodegradable cleaning products

  • A dosing system for cleaning products

Examples of our contribution to nature conservation are:

  • Green roof with, among other things, a herb garden and plants that attract insects and honeybees.

  • A beehive

  • 20 nest boxes for swifts

  • 1 roost for the pipistrelle bat

  • 2 boxes for bats

Reduction of our energy consumption:

For optimal insight into our energy consumption, we register our electricity usage monthly. In addition, we take the following measures:

  • A lot of energy is saved by our ATES system (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage - storing heat and cold in the ground)

  • A contract has been signed for green energy.

  • We only use low energy consumption light bulbs.

  • Lighting is dimmed during the night.

  • We have the latest, energy-efficient equipment.

  • Energy-savers are used in all hotel rooms. This allows the lighting, heating, or cooling to be activated only when the room is in use.

  • High-efficiency boilers

  • A building management system for controlling the heating and cooling of different spaces in the hotel.

Reduction of our water consumption:

To be conscious of our water consumption, we record our water usage monthly. In order to minimize our water consumption, we implement the following measures:

  • An optimal balance between comfort and water consumption in hotel rooms and public facilities for showers, baths, toilets, and faucets.

  • There are sensors for the taps in the public restroom facilities.

  • Changing towels in the hotel rooms upon request from the guest.

  • Changing of bed linen in the hotel rooms occurs after three nights or upon request from the guest.

  • Automatic system to prevent toilets from continuously running, ensuring there will never be any water waste.

  • Motion sensors for urinals

Reduction of our waste:

We critically examine the waste streams within the hotel by monitoring the quantity of various waste fractions on a monthly basis. In order to reduce the amount of waste, we implement the following:

  • We reduce the packaging of our fresh products by encouraging the use of reusable packaging or packaging that is returned to the supplier.

  • At buffets, as little packaging material as possible is used, unless it is obviously desired for hygiene purposes.

  • We collect the following waste materials: cardboard, paper, glass, "HHW" (broken lamps, batteries, paint), electrical equipment, cooking oil, ink cartridges and toners, plastic, and kitchen waste (swill). We collaborate with recognized organizations for the collection and processing of this waste.
