Valkhof Museum Nijmegen

Valkhof Museum Nijmegen

Dive into the history of Nijmegen

From June 6, the renovated Valkhof Museum is open again! Valkhof Museum tells stories at the intersection of times, people, cultures, and ideas. Stories about then and now. About art and history. About you and the other. Because history is not only behind us. It is also here, in the present. And where you are now, others were before you. By making unexpected connections, Valkhof Museum lets you look at the past and today with different eyes.

Nijmegen

The museum is located in a special place in Nijmegen, on the former northern border of the Roman Empire. For thousands of years, many lives have converged here: from the first inhabitants in prehistory to Roman soldiers from distant lands. And from poor people in shanties to powerful emperors in palaces. Here, borders were—and are—drawn, protected, shifted, and breached. Not only between countries and armies but also between worlds, ideas, and lifestyles.

Who we are today

Valkhof Museum shows these boundaries. Because what once happened shapes who we are today. The museum does this through a unique collection of art and more than 40,000 years of history. On the ground floor of the renovated building, you travel through stories about humans on the border, from prehistory to now. And in the exhibitions on the first floor, you explore the boundary within humans themselves. They make you think and move. Who are you, in the here and now?

Café

Continue your journey through the colorful shop, or chat in the bright café with a terrace. You will find them on the ground floor, at the entrance. You can visit here even without a ticket.
